Italy’s World Cup Hope Ended by Sweden

Italy’s dream of continuing their long run of participating in World Cup meet its end as they were eliminated by Sweden in the play offs round.

Losing 1-0 in their first meeting, Gli Azzurri were pouring forward vigorously since kick off as they search for that important equalizing goal.

However, combination of rush passing, lack of creativity along with solid defensive display from Sweden simply put the home team under lots of trouble in breaking down their opponent’s back line.

Despite dominating possession, Giampiero Ventura’s side can’t create enough clear cut chances during the first 45 minutes as their attacking pattern becomes too predictable at times.

Italy tried to change things up after the break as they inserted several new players such as Stephan El Shaarawy, Andrea Belotti along with Federico Bernardeschi.

Although those three, notably El Shaarawy did add a slight spark for Azzurri’s attackint, but it was still not enough to break down the tight Swedish wall.

The host’s relentless attack were not rewarded as they struggle to get even just one goal that can at least push that game into extra time.

Eventually, Sweden successfully hold down their slender 1-0 lead until the final whistle was blown as they shocked and silenced the crowd at San Siro.

That goalless draw was more than enough for Janne Andersson’s men to book their place for upcoming World Cup 2018 in Russia.

While Italy have to experience a rare absent from the tournament, something that haven’t happened since way back in 1958.
