Lukaku Scores As Manchester United Overpower Everton (4-0)

Manchester United got back to winning ways in the Premier League on Saturday after last weekend’s draw at Stoke, thanks to a late flurry of goals against Everton.

A goal from Antonio Valencia and late strikes from Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Romelu Lukaku and Anthony Martial were all the Old Trafford outfit needed to overpower Everton.

United went ahead through a fantastic goal from right-back Antonio Valencia that surely has to be a goal of the season contender.

The game was Wayne Rooney’s first at Old Trafford since leaving the club in the summer and Jose Mourinho predicted he would get the reception a United legend deserves – and he did from the supporters.

Speaking to Sky Sport after the match, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said:

“I think the performance was very good, especially in the first 30-35 minute, it was probably our best performance of the season.

“We pressed them and they did not have a chance to get out, they did not have a shot, it was very impressive. After that, Everton’s good players came out and showed their qualities. They gave us difficulty but I looked behind me on the bench and saw alternatives.

“The Premier League now is becoming very trendy with five at the back, so the best way to play against that is to play five at the back yourself. When you try not to match the tactical system of the opponent, you take risks.

“So we played with three up top plus Henrikh Mkhitaryan. You have to kill the game and give them little chances. There was a moment were I felt we did not kill it so we have to make it solid with Ander Herrera. The second goal went in, then game over.”

Also speaking after the game, Lukaku said:

“We could have scored more in the first half. We weren’t clinical enough.

Everton created a lot of problems in midfield.

We were patient but try and score the second goal as quickly as possible.

I thought I had to be patient and keep running and keep focused.

It’s another goal and i’m happy with the win that’s the only objective to me.

The celebration was a bit of banter the free kick after I the missed free kick. It’s just football.”

Manchester City and Manchester United are joint-top of the Premier League, level on absolutely everything – points, wins, goals scored and goals conceded – however, Pep Guardiola’s side sit top on alphabetical order.
