Rivers United captain, Festus Austin, has said the club would go all out for victory on Sunday against visiting El-Kanemi Warriors in their opening match of the 2017/18 season of the Nigeria Professional Football League.
Rivers face El-Kanemi at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Rivers, who posted a largely underwhelming performance last season, battled against relegation from the topflight to the Nigeria National League.
Austin believes that with the reinforcements made by coach Stanley Eguma in areas of perceived weakness and the consolidation of their areas of strength, the club would do well this season.
“The first match is very important and we want all three points. We are going to defeat El-Kanemi Warriors in Port Harcourt. Winning our home games is very important,” he said.
“We have to ensure that we make our home a fortress while we go away to get the points necessary to make a statement in the league.”
With El-Kanemi, who made one of the biggest coaching changes in the off-season by signing coachImamaAmapakabo, Rivers face a tough test at home.
But Austin said they would do everything to neutralise the threat posed by the visitors.
He said, “It will not be an easy match because their new coach will want to make a statement – but since he will not be with the team, we can take advantage of that to start our season on a good note.
“The new players we have too will help us to avoid the struggles we had last season and I believe we are capable of winning the match.”
