Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s media team has dismissed reports suggesting that his recent visit to Morocco was connected to political negotiations or coalition talks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, Atiku’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, clarified that the former presidential candidate travelled to Marrakech solely to attend and chair the wedding ceremony of Cherina and Muna Okey Ezeibe held on Saturday.
Shaibu stressed that the trip had no political undertone, describing the event as a celebration of love, friendship, family values, and African unity.
According to him, the ceremony attracted dignitaries, friends, and family members from across the continent, reflecting strong cultural and international ties. He noted that the occasion was personally significant to Atiku because of his long-standing relationship with businessman Okey Ezeibe, father of the groom.
He also disclosed that the bride’s father, Lassina Zerbo, former Prime Minister of Burkina Faso, attended the ceremony, further highlighting its international nature.
Shaibu said Atiku, while addressing guests, described marriage as “a sacred institution built on love, sacrifice, patience, and mutual respect,” and prayed for peace, prosperity, and lasting happiness for the couple.
The aide maintained that the Marrakech gathering should not be interpreted as part of ongoing political consultations, despite growing public interest in Atiku’s activities ahead of the 2027 elections.
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, remains a key figure in discussions surrounding opposition alliances and political realignments.
