Iyabo Obasanjo Set to Return to PDP Following APC Resignation

Former Senator Iyabo Obasanjo is finalising plans to rejoin the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), just days after dumping the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Multiple sources close to the daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo confirmed to The Cable that she has already communicated her defection to key stakeholders within the opposition party.

“I can confirm that Senator Iyabo Obasanjo is moving to the PDP,” a source stated. “Her political focus is firmly on Ogun State and the future direction of its governance.”

Joint Rally with Adebutu Planned for June 16

Insiders reveal that logistics are being concluded for a major joint rally featuring Iyabo Obasanjo and former federal lawmaker Oladipupo Adebutu. The event is scheduled for June 16 at the PDP secretariat in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

According to another source, the event is designed to streamline their political ambitions:

  • The Strategy: A combined Obasanjo/Adebutu campaign structure.

  • The Focus: Aligning upcoming senatorial and governorship campaigns ahead of the next election cycle.

Background: A Return to Familiar Grounds

This move marks a homecoming for Obasanjo, who was originally elected to the Senate in April 2007 under the PDP banner. During her tenure, she chaired the Senate Committee on Health before losing her re-election bid in 2011. She also previously served as the Ogun State Commissioner for Health.

The APC Fallout

Obasanjo’s exit from the APC comes just two months after her governorship aspirations within the party hit a brick wall.

  • February 2026: Obasanjo officially joined the APC and declared her intention to run for the Ogun State governorship.

  • The Turning Point: She suspended her campaign after the APC adopted Senator Solomon Adeola (Ogun West) as its consensus candidate for the 2027 gubernatorial election.

In her official resignation notice, the former senator levelled serious allegations against the APC leadership, citing persistent disrespect and a breach of prior agreements. She further claimed that her supporters were systematically mistreated and blocked from accessing the venue where the party's consensus candidate was formalised.
