Nigeria’s 36 State Governors Back State Police Establishment

Governors of Nigeria’s 36 states have officially declared their support for the creation of state police. The decision was reached during a Nigeria Governors' Forum (NGF) meeting in Abuja, which concluded early Thursday.

In a communiqué signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the forum emphasized that any new policing framework must be constitutionally sound, protect citizens' rights, and align with principles of federalism. The backing follows a detailed presentation by the Forum’s secretariat and State Attorneys-General, who are actively reviewing the necessary constitutional amendments. This development comes as the State Police Bill progresses through the National Assembly, having already passed its second reading in the Senate.

Beyond security, the governors addressed key infrastructure and health initiatives:

  • Power Sector Reforms: The NGF threw its support behind the National Solar Super-Grid (NSSG) Initiative—a proposal to integrate decentralized solar power with the national grid—to boost energy security and economic growth.

  • Healthcare & Nutrition: The governors pledged to back the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative to combat child malnutrition, while advocating for continued engagement on the upcoming National Nutrition Bill.
