Tinubu Marks 27 Years of Democracy, Honours 51 Icons, Announces Reforms

In a nationwide broadcast marking 27 years of uninterrupted civilian rule, President Bola Tinubu declared that while Nigeria’s democracy is not perfect, it remains the ultimate vehicle for national development. Commemorating the historic June 12, 1993 presidential election won by the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, the President paid tribute to the heroes of the pro-democracy struggle and announced a series of major national honours, institutional changes, and policy milestones.

Key Highlights of the Address

1. National Honours & Institutional Renaming

President Tinubu conferred national honours on 51 eminent Nigerians, including pro-democracy activists, media veterans, and "soldier-democrats" who actively opposed military dictatorship.

  • Prominent Honourees: NADECO chieftains Chief Ayo Opadokun and Chief Ralph Obioha; media icons Lade Bonuola, Femi Kusa, Sir Ademola Osinubi, and Dele Alake; and activists Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, Richard Akinnola, and Prof. Sylvester Odion-Akhaine.

  • Soldier-Democrats Recognized: Retired military officers including Col. Sambo Dasuki, Col. Lawan Gwadabe, Maj.-Gen. Ishola Williams, and the Etsu Nupe, Brig.-Gen. Yahaya Abubakar.

  • Institutional Honour: The Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna has been revitalised and renamed the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology to honour the late General’s vision for national partnership.

2. Security: Record Budget and Precision Targeting

Addressing recent student abductions in Oyo and Borno states, Tinubu asserted that "democracy without security is a mirage." He highlighted his administration's security benchmarks:

  • Funding & Manpower: The 2026 budget allocates a record ₦5.41 trillion to defence, alongside the ongoing recruitment of over 50,000 police officers.

  • Counter-Terrorism Success: Terror-related deaths have dropped by 81% since 2015. In the past year alone, over 13,000 terrorists were neutralised, and 124,000 fighters and dependents have surrendered since 2023.

  • Ultimatum to Criminals: The President issued a stern warning to bandits, kidnappers, and terror sponsors to surrender immediately, stating that the window of mercy will not remain open forever.

3. Economic Reforms & "Democracy in the Pocket"

Defending his administration's fiscal reforms as tough but necessary choices to save public finances, Tinubu promised that the next phase of his agenda will focus on tangible growth:

  • The Goal: To reduce inflation, boost local production, improve living standards, and ensure the benefits of governance are "felt in the pocket" of ordinary citizens.

  • Local Government Autonomy: Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to full financial autonomy for Nigeria's 774 local governments, linking rural insecurity directly to the historical collapse of grassroots governance.

4. Resolving the Power Crisis

To fix the chronic legacy debts, transmission fragilities, and metering deficits plundering the electricity sector, the administration is deploying targeted interventions:

  • Debt Clearance: The Presidential Power Sector Task Force has been authorised to raise a ₦4 trillion bond to clear long-standing legacy debts in the power value chain.

  • Decentralisation: The newly active Electricity Act is already yielding results by empowering state governments to generate, transmit, and distribute their own power.

“The generation of our founding fathers secured independence—the generation of June 12 secured democracy. Our generation must secure prosperity.”President Bola Tinubu
