Nigerian music executive and artist manager, Ubi Franklin, has opened up about one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing that he attempted suicide following the collapse of his marriage to Nollywood actress and ex-wife, Lilian Esoro.

Naija Brain reports that Franklin shared the emotional story in a video posted on his Instagram page, using his personal experience to encourage fans facing difficult moments in life.

Reflecting on the end of his marriage, Franklin admitted he struggled with depression and overwhelming embarrassment after the separation. He said the emotional pain pushed him into a dark place before he eventually accepted that not every relationship is meant to last.

The music executive disclosed that he attempted to take his own life on several occasions, recalling one incident when he drove to the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos intending to end his life. According to him, his cousin, Omini Stitches, intervened and saved him.

“I went through some crazy depressing positions. I remember one time I bought a red CL, and I drove that car to the Third Mainland Bridge to go and commit suicide. The only luck I had was my cousin brother, Omini Stitches, who came and saved me. Several times I tried to commit suicide, Omini saved me because I was so embarrassed. I kept asking myself what I had done to deserve all of this,” he said.

Franklin explained that, despite having a successful career and managing one of Nigeria’s biggest music stars at the time, the breakdown of his marriage left him emotionally devastated.

Looking back, he said he now believes the relationship ended the way it was meant to and that he and Lilian Esoro have moved on amicably. According to him, they have built a healthy co-parenting relationship centered on their son and continue to support each other whenever possible.

He described their son as the greatest blessing to come out of the marriage and stressed that people should not allow painful experiences to turn into hatred.

Franklin urged those facing heartbreak or disappointment to learn from life’s challenges rather than hold on to resentment, emphasizing that some setbacks are opportunities for growth and personal healing.

If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide or self-harm, reaching out to a trusted friend, family member, or a qualified mental health professional can make a real difference. If there is an immediate risk, contact your local emergency services or a crisis support service as soon as possible.
