Toke Makinwa Says Many Women Regret Marrying in Their 20s
Media personality and actress Toke Makinwa has shared her views on marriage, claiming that many women who tied the knot in their 20s later regret the decision.
Speaking on a recent episode of her podcast, Toke Moments, alongside former Big Brother Naija housemate Tacha, Makinwa argued that women should avoid rushing into marriage at a young age.
According to her, most women are still discovering themselves in their 20s and may not yet have the maturity or self-awareness needed to make such a lifelong commitment.
“Women have no business getting married in their 20s. You don’t even know yourself yet. Those who did are regretting it now. Even those who are still married, if they are being honest, they will tell you that they shouldn’t have rushed it,” she said.
Adding to the discussion, Tacha shared a popular saying from her mother about marriage.
“My mum says marriage is like an institution. Those inside want to get out, while those outside can’t wait to get in,” she remarked.
In a separate interview, Makinwa also dismissed the notion that modern Nigerian women are excessively materialistic or only pursue relationships for financial gain.
Speaking on the MENtality Podcast hosted by Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, she argued that relationships between men and women have always involved some form of exchange and that the trend predates the current generation.
According to Makinwa, transactional dynamics have existed in relationships throughout history, adding that many men contribute to the perception by making financial support their primary offering.
“From time immemorial, a relationship between a man and a woman has always been transactional, right from the Garden of Eden and even in our parents’ generation. The degree at which it is happening now, I will blame the men. Sometimes, financial benefits are all some men have to offer,” she said.
