Nollywood Actress Jaiye Kuti Laments Lack Of Support Among Colleagues

Nollywood actress, Jaiye Kuti, has decried what she described as the growing lack of solidarity within the Nigerian film industry, alleging that many actors and filmmakers are unwilling to support one another during difficult times.

Speaking on the Oyinmomo podcast, Kuti said many industry practitioners experience similar challenges but prefer to pretend that everything is fine rather than openly address the issues.

The actress said the trend has weakened relationships within Nollywood and made collaboration more difficult among stakeholders.

Kuti noted that film production requires significant financial investment, adding that many people fail to appreciate the pressure producers face to recover the costs of making and distributing movies in cinemas.

She also stated that the glamorous image celebrities project on social media often conceals the realities of the struggles they endure behind the scenes.

Recalling her experience after some cinemas removed her film from their schedules, Kuti said she publicly expressed her disappointment but received no support from fellow actors, despite many of them having faced similar situations.

According to her, colleagues who ignored her plight were quick to send birthday wishes, a gesture she said she no longer values.

"Our relationship is gradually breaking down. Everybody is just acting like it's okay. How is it okay? The people you're emulating and looking at as an example, do you really want to know them? The people you call celebrities and follow on social media," she said.

"Not one actor stood by me or went to those cinemas or even supported me, despite the fact that we're all going through the same thing.
