Why Tinubu Must Resign — Peter Obi Alleges Grand Corruption

Peter Obi, Nigeria's presidential hopeful

Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has reiterated his call for President Bola Tinubu to resign, accusing his administration of incompetence, insensitivity, and failing to deliver on its campaign promises.

Naija Brain reports that Obi, in a statement posted on his 𝕏 handle on Sunday, alleged that the Tinubu administration is presiding over widespread corruption, citing an alleged ₦8.83 trillion in unbudgeted expenditure referenced in a recent International Monetary Fund (IMF) consultation report.

According to Obi, the expenditure was not captured in the 2025 Appropriation Act and was therefore outside legislative oversight and administrative scrutiny.

The former Peter Obi said the ₦8.83 trillion amounts to about two per cent of Nigeria's Gross Domestic Product (GDP), more than 35 per cent of the country's ₦23.96 trillion capital budget for 2025, and exceeds the combined allocations for the education and health sectors.

He argued that the alleged expenditure reflects a broader pattern of financial mismanagement and corruption under the current administration.

Obi maintained that the continuous emergence of corruption allegations, coupled with what he described as the government's failure to prioritise the welfare and security of Nigerians, leaves President Bola Tinubu with no honourable option but to resign.

In the statement, Obi described the reported expenditure as "horrible," noting that if properly utilised, the funds could have significantly improved public healthcare and education, supported the establishment of hundreds of cottage industries, created jobs for thousands of graduates, and accelerated economic development.

He further alleged that the development demonstrates a pattern of grand corruption that disregards basic principles of public finance management, warning that such practices pose a threat to national security and the country's stability.

Obi also argued that the alleged financial irregularities reinforce his earlier call for Tinubu's resignation over what he described as incompetence, lack of capacity, lack of compassion, and failure to fulfil campaign promises.

He called on Nigerians to lawfully demand accountability from the administration, insisting that the reported findings underscore the need for greater transparency in the management of public funds.
