Nigerian activist Aisha Yesufu has warned that elections must be free and fair to prevent civil unrest in the country.
Naija Brain reports that Yesufu made the remarks during an interview with Symfoni TV, where she discussed Nigeria’s electoral system and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to her, INEC itself is not the major problem affecting Nigeria’s elections, but the individuals working within the commission and other institutions involved in the electoral process.
Yesufu urged Nigerians to hold INEC officials accountable and demand that they uphold democratic principles rather than relying on the commission to voluntarily do the right thing.
She also described election day as an opportunity for Nigerians to bring about meaningful change through their votes and ensure that credible candidates are elected.
She said, “There is no better day for revolution than election day. I’ve always said that INEC is not the problem. The people in INEC are the problem.
“So everybody should tell their members who are in INEC, police or whatever to do the right thing.
“Because on that day we will stand and be on the streets. Nobody is going to work. Nobody is travelling. Everybody will be there. So we can easily do that revolution that people call for on that day.
“So that’s how we are going to follow it. There’s nothing like you are depending on the goodness of INEC. Everybody must do the right thing.”
