There are several ways Nigerian students can make money while in school, including blogging, content creation, monetising tech skills, offline marketing, gift card trading, event planning and tutoring.
1. Content Writing:
I’m putting this at number one because it’s my own side hustle, and if you’re a student who enjoys writing, you should seriously consider making money from content writing.
As a content writer, you can create articles and blog posts on a wide range of topics. Whether you’re interested in food, health, fashion, sports, technology or finance, there’s always an audience for good content.
However, before you jump into content writing, there’s something important you should know.
There are two major ways to make money from writing, and you don’t have to limit yourself to just one.
The first is to start your own blog and build an audience. Once you have a decent and reliable readership, you can partner with brands and get paid to promote their products or services on your platform.
This approach can take time to grow, but once your blog gains traction, it can become a profitable source of income.
The second option is to offer your writing services to brands that already have blogs. You can reach out to companies, pitch your services and get paid to write articles for them.
This is the more straightforward option because you don’t have to spend years building an audience or creating a platform from scratch.
2. Content Creation:
These days, creating quality videos doesn’t require expensive equipment. A good camera, a tripod stand, and decent lighting can be enough to produce impressive content.
If you can create engaging videos with these basic tools, then you can turn your creativity into a source of income, just like some of my friends have done.
As a student content creator, one of the best ways to make money is by working with brands to promote their products. You can create videos that highlight the benefits of a product, demonstrate how it works, explain how to use it, and show your audience why they should consider buying it.
The great thing about content creation is that brands, both big and small, are constantly looking for ways to increase their visibility. And they’re willing to pay creators who can help them get their products in front of the right audience.
If you position yourself properly, this demand for promotion can become a steady source of income, even while you’re still a student.
However, to succeed in this space, you need to grow your social media presence and establish yourself as a creator whose content people can trust.
3. Monetising Your Tech Skills
I have a theory that almost every Nigerian undergraduate has attended a computer school at some point before or during university.
Whether you picked up your tech skills before entering university or developed them along the way, now is the time to start turning those skills into income.
Skills such as graphic design, web development and data analysis are in high demand. With startups and businesses constantly expanding, there are always employers looking for people who can bring these skills to the table.
To start making money from your tech skills, create sample projects and build a strong portfolio that shows what you can do. You should also learn how to confidently talk about your skills, both when speaking with friends and when promoting your services online.

I don’t know if I’m the only one, but there’s a certain joy that comes from knowing you can easily get what you need from a student plug instead of having to search around the market.
And that brings us to another side hustle you can consider as a student: offline marketing.
Honestly, campus can be one of the best places to sell physical products.
Whether it’s perfumes, hair accessories, clothes, shoes or stationery, students constantly need everyday products. If you can provide those products conveniently and at the right price, you already have a potential market.
However, don’t rush into buying products to sell. Start by carrying out a quick survey to understand what students around you actually need. There’s no point selling car parts on a campus where only a handful of students own cars.
Once you identify a product with strong demand, decide what you want to sell, calculate your costs, set your prices and start promoting your business.
The major challenge with offline marketing is that you may need some capital to get started. But if you choose the right products and manage your costs properly, it can become a profitable student business.
5. Gift Card Swapping
I recently came across gift card swapping and how students can make money from it, so I thought it was worth adding to this list.
First, you should understand what gift cards are. They are prepaid cards or digital codes that can be used to purchase goods and services from specific companies. For example, an Amazon gift card can be used to make purchases on Amazon.
The idea behind gift card swapping is simple: you sell your unwanted gift card to a trusted platform or buyer in exchange for cash. The amount you receive depends on factors such as the type, value and region of the gift card.
Gift card swapping may sound like an easy way to make money until you realise that many gift cards are region-restricted. In other words, a gift card purchased in one country may not be usable in another.
This creates an opportunity because many Nigerians receive gift cards from friends or family members abroad but have no use for them because of these restrictions.
As a student, you can help people convert unwanted gift cards into cash through platforms like Cardtonic while earning a commission or service fee for facilitating the transaction.
For example, if a $200 Apple gift card is worth ₦210,000 on Cardtonic, you could help the owner sell it and charge a 2% service fee. The seller gets the agreed amount, while you earn for helping with the transaction.
There is also another way to make money from gift cards: buying them when their rates are low and reselling them when the rates increase. However, I would not recommend this approach because gift card rates can also fall, leaving you with a potential loss.
6. Event Planning
If you are always the person organising your friends’ hangouts, department dinners or campus events, you may already have the skills needed to turn event planning into a side hustle.
You can approach department presidents, social directors or student organisations and offer to plan their dinners, picnics, hangouts and other events for a reasonable fee.
If you have some starting capital, you can also invest in basic decorations and event equipment and rent them out whenever students need them. This gives you another way to generate income from the same business.
Event planning can be a great fit if you enjoy coordinating people, managing projects and making sure everything comes together as planned. And because there is almost always one event or another happening on campus, there is plenty of room to find clients.
7. Tutoring
I believe every university student has the ability to learn. The major difference is often how quickly each person understands and retains new concepts.
So, if you are someone who understands academic concepts quickly, tutoring can be an excellent way to make extra money.
One of the easiest ways to get started is by teaching courses or topics you have already mastered to students in lower levels. You can use what you already know to help others while earning from it.
