After a tragic car crash, Anthony Joshua will fight for the first time

British-Nigerian heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua is gearing up for a return to the ring in July 2026, in what will be his first fight since surviving a devastating car accident in Nigeria late last year.

The 36-year-old former two-time world champion was involved in a serious crash on December 29, 2025, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State. The accident, which involved a collision with a stationary truck, tragically claimed the lives of two key members of his team—strength and conditioning coach Sina Ghami and trainer Latif “Latz” Ayodele.

Joshua escaped with minor injuries and was discharged from hospital shortly after. He has since been recovering in the UK.

His most recent bout was a win over Jake Paul in Miami on December 19, 2025, just days before the crash.

Promoter Eddie Hearn confirmed that an earlier return had been postponed due to the incident. However, Joshua is now targeting a summer comeback as talks progress around a major fight deal in Saudi Arabia, likely tied to Riyadh Season.

Hearn indicated that Joshua will likely take part in a tune-up fight in July before potentially stepping into a blockbuster showdown with Tyson Fury in November. Although fighters such as Deontay Wilder have been mentioned as possible opponents, the immediate priority is easing Joshua back into top form. Fury has already issued a public challenge, but plans currently favor a gradual return before any high-stakes clash.

Joshua made his first public appearance in the UK in early April at the O2 Arena, where he spoke emotionally about the loss of his friends and pledged to honor their memory. He has since resumed training, including sessions at his original gym under early coach Sean Murphy.

Support has poured in from fans and across the boxing world as anticipation builds for his comeback. While no opponent or venue has been officially confirmed for July, an announcement is expected soon.
