Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has revealed that he faced intense "spiritual pressure" before appointing Dr. Peter Akpe as his new deputy governor, following the sudden passing of Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo on December 11, 2025.
Governor Diri made the disclosure on Sunday during a special thanksgiving service held in Akpe’s honour at the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) regional headquarters on the Sani Abacha Expressway in Yenagoa.
Akpe was officially sworn into office on February 25, 2026, two months after the demise of the former deputy governor.
Divine Guidance Over Speculation
Addressing the congregation, Governor Diri emphasized that his decision was guided strictly by prayers, divine direction, and merit, rather than political rumors or personal ties.
"I faced spiritual pressure picking a new deputy governor after the passing of Senator Lawrence Ewhurudjkpo," Diri stated. "While the pressure was on me, I looked out for God’s direction amid the prayers of men of God."
The governor dismissed speculations surrounding the appointment, asserting that Akpe’s competence was the sole deciding factor. He also made a surprising revelation regarding their lineage.
"I did not pay attention to rumors and speculation because Dr. Akpe has the competence to deliver on the job," the governor added. "I never knew he was my relative until recently I found out he hailed from my maternal home."
A Call for Continuous Prayers
Shifting his focus to state matters, Governor Diri described the prevailing peace and security in Bayelsa as "priceless." He enjoined residents and the religious community to sustain their intercessions for those in authority.
"No matter how bad a government may be, people should never fail to pray for their leaders," Diri urged.
From Waterfront to Government House
In his remarks, the newly minted deputy governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, shared an emotional testimony of his journey, describing a childhood defined by severe hardship and resilient faith.
Akpe recalled growing up in a zinc house at the waterfront, where his family constantly battled financial difficulties, including struggles to pay school fees.
"There was a time they brought my father to the center of the community to tie him over unpaid debts until there was intervention," Akpe revealed.
He noted that his family's fortunes began to shift following a spiritual transformation years ago, attributing his political elevation to absolute divine grace.
"When we met the Lord some years ago, God started helping us. It was not so smooth as you see it now," Akpe said.
