INEC Declares APC Candidate Winner Of Kebbi Assembly By-election

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has retained its seat in the Kebbi State House of Assembly after its candidate, Rabiu Garba Aiki, secured a landslide victory in the Zuru State Constituency by-election.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Aiki the winner on Saturday following a poll characterized by peaceful conduct but marred by low voter turnout.

The Verdict in Figures

The INEC Returning Officer, Professor Muhammad Bashar of the Federal University, Birnin Kebbi, announced the official results at the constituency collation centre.

Aiki maintained a commanding lead across all 10 electoral wards, routing his closest rival, Aliyu Galadima Muhammad of the Labour Party (LP).

A Vacant Seat Filled

The by-election was organized by INEC to fill the legislative vacancy created by the death of the former Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman Zuru.

While the APC's sweeping victory further consolidates its majority control of the state legislature, the exercise highlighted a persistent challenge with voter apathy. Less than 5% of the 109,385 registered voters in the constituency turned out to be accredited for the poll.

Despite the low engagement, the exercise was largely successful operational-wise. Security operatives and electoral officials maintained a strong presence across all polling units, ensuring the voting process concluded without any major disruptions.
