Barcelona Legend Xavi Open to AFCON Coaching Role, Eyes International Management

Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has expressed his desire to move into international management, revealing that coaching at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) is among the opportunities that appeal to him.

The former Spain midfielder has been without a managerial role since leaving Barcelona in May 2024 after the club ended his tenure following a trophyless campaign.

Xavi spent nearly three seasons in charge of the Catalan giants, leading them to the 2022/23 LaLiga title and the Supercopa de España before departing after a disappointing run of results.

Prior to returning to Barcelona as manager, the 46-year-old enjoyed a successful spell with Qatari club Al Sadd, where he won seven trophies and established himself as one of the most promising young coaches.

Speaking to RNE via beIN Sports, Xavi said international football now aligns better with both his professional ambitions and family life.

"My next step could be a national team. I'll say it openly: this could be a good fit for me," Xavi said.

"I have family. A club wouldn't allow me as much time with my family; I've got young children.

"I'm keen to take part as a coach in a World Cup, Euros, AFCON, or the Asian Cup."

During his time at Barcelona, Xavi managed 143 matches, recording 90 victories, 24 draws and 29 defeats, giving him a win rate of 62.9 percent.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest midfielders in football history, Xavi enjoyed an illustrious playing career with both Barcelona and Spain. He made 767 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 85 goals, and held the club's appearance record before it was surpassed by Lionel Messi.

A product of Barcelona's famed La Masia academy, Xavi made his senior debut in 1998 and became a key figure in the club's most successful era, helping the Blaugrana dominate Spanish and European football.

At international level, Xavi earned 133 caps for Spain and was instrumental in the country's golden generation, winning UEFA Euro 2008, the 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012. He was named Player of the Tournament at Euro 2008 before retiring from international football after the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
