Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has filed a ₦10 billion lawsuit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over the alleged denial of access to members of his family while he was in the agency’s custody.

El-Rufai is seeking damages over claims that his wife, Aichatou Asabe, and his son, Abba El-Rufai, were prevented from visiting him during his detention.

According to the former governor, the alleged restriction on family visits violated his rights and caused distress to his family.

The development has sparked a fresh dispute between El-Rufai and the anti-corruption agency, with the ICPC offering a different account of what happened.

The commission reportedly maintained that El-Rufai’s wife arrived at its premises after the designated visiting hours, rather than being deliberately denied access.

The agency’s position suggests that the alleged denial was linked to its visitation schedule and procedures for individuals in custody.

El-Rufai, however, has proceeded with the legal action, asking the court to award him ₦10 billion in damages over the alleged infringement of his rights.

The lawsuit adds another layer to the ongoing legal and political developments surrounding the former Kaduna governor and the ICPC.
