IGP Disu Warns Nigerians Against Jungle Justice, Says Perpetrators Face Murder Charges
The Inspector-General of Police, Tunde Disu, has issued a stern warning to Nigerians against taking the law into their own hands, saying anyone involved in jungle justice or mob action resulting in the assault or death of a suspect will face criminal prosecution.
Disu directed police authorities across the country to treat cases of mob violence seriously and ensure that those involved are properly investigated and brought before the court.
The police chief maintained that the fact that an individual is suspected of committing a crime does not give members of the public the right to punish the person themselves.
He urged Nigerians to resist the temptation to attack suspects, stressing that allegations of criminality should be handled by the appropriate law enforcement agencies and the courts.
According to the IGP, anyone who participates in the assault or killing of a suspect during mob action could be held responsible for homicide or murder, depending on the circumstances surrounding the incident.
He also called on police commands to make use of available forensic and intelligence resources when investigating cases involving jungle justice and mob violence.
The warning comes amid concerns over the continued occurrence of mob attacks in different parts of the country, with suspects sometimes subjected to severe violence before they can be properly investigated.
Disu stressed that jungle justice cannot be regarded as an alternative form of justice, insisting that every suspect deserves to go through the legal process.
He therefore urged Nigerians to report suspected criminals to the police rather than taking matters into their own hands, warning that those who participate in unlawful mob action will be made to face the consequences of their actions.
