Peter Okoye Reveals Why He Fears Poverty More Than D3ath
Nigerian singer Peter Okoye has opened up about his difficult childhood, revealing that poverty—not d3ath—is his greatest fear.
The music star made the revelation during an interview on the Nancy Isime Show on Monday, where he reflected on his upbringing and the financial challenges his family endured.
Okoye said he has never been particularly afraid of d3ath, but his childhood experience with poverty left a lasting impression on him.
According to the singer, he grew up in a large family of eight children who lived with their parents in a one-bedroom apartment. Due to the limited space, the family had to use a curtain to divide the room and create some privacy.
He also recalled a painful incident involving their former landlord. Okoye said the landlord sold the compound where they lived, and although the family pleaded for more time to make alternative arrangements, a bulldozer eventually arrived and demolished the building while they were still inside.
“I’m not afraid of death. The only thing I’m afraid of in this life is poverty. It is being broke,” Okoye said.
“I have tested it before. I have been in our house with our parents and a bulldozer came and demolished the house.
“We were living in a one-bedroom flat with me, my mom, my father, like the whole family. Six boys and two girls lived in a one-bedroom apartment.
“They had to divide the room with a curtain. The landlord had sold the compound and we were trying to plead with him to give us some time.
“The next thing, we were at home, then a bulldozer came and demolished it. We have tasted poverty before.”
The singer’s experience, he explained, shaped his outlook on life and remains one of the reasons he is deeply determined to avoid returning to the hardship he experienced growing up.
