Nigerian influencer and entrepreneur, Sophia Momodu, has opened up about the emotional and psychological abuse she endured after becoming pregnant out of wedlock for Afrobeats superstar Davido.
Sophia made the revelation while speaking at a United Nations General Assembly event in New York on Monday.
The mother of Davido’s first daughter, Imade Adeleke, said she was subjected to ridicule because she became pregnant outside marriage despite being a pastor’s daughter.
According to Sophia Momodu, the intense criticism and emotional trauma affected her so deeply that she struggled to use her voice, even as a well-known public figure.
“I am a pastor’s daughter who got pregnant out of wedlock by a global superstar. And I was mocked. It was crazy. I had to find myself in the midst of all that.”
She added that the constant negativity left her emotionally drained and worried about how people perceived her.
“For a long time, I didn’t have a voice despite being famous. I was worried and getting drained by the negative criticisms. If you are a Nigerian, you will know that it is almost a taboo for a pastor’s daughter to have a child out of wedlock.”
Sophia said she eventually found her voice after being repeatedly pressured to remain silent because of the shame attached to her experience.
Her comments have drawn attention to the social pressure and stigma faced by women who become pregnant outside marriage, particularly in conservative Nigerian communities.
