| South Africa players dejected after Canada ended their 2026 World Cup campaign. |
Canada secured a place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after Stephen Eustáquio scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner to seal a 1-0 victory over South Africa in Los Angeles.
With both teams contesting their first-ever World Cup knockout match, the game started at a lively tempo. South Africa threatened early as Teboho Mokoena forced Maxime Crépeau into a save with a long-range effort, while Jonathan David squandered Canada's first clear opportunity by volleying wide from inside the penalty area.
Canada gradually asserted their dominance and created the better chances before the interval. Derek Cornelius rose unmarked to meet a free-kick from close range, but Ronwen Williams produced a comfortable save. The South African goalkeeper was called into action again to deny Tanitoluwa Oluwaseyi before watching another effort sail onto the roof of the net.
Jesse Marsch's side continued to pile on the pressure, with Moïse Bombito appearing to have broken the deadlock, only for Aubrey Modiba to make a superb goal-line clearance to preserve South Africa's clean sheet heading into half-time.
Canada remained the more dangerous side after the restart, although clear-cut chances were limited. Williams again denied Oluwaseyi in the 65th minute, while Mbekezeli Mbokazi reacted quickly to prevent Jonathan David from converting the rebound.
Marsch introduced Alphonso Davies for his first appearance of the tournament, and the Bayern Munich defender nearly made an immediate impact. His incisive pass released Promise David, whose low effort drifted narrowly wide of the post.
South Africa's best chance of the second half came through Oswin Appollis, whose powerful strike was tipped away by Crépeau, but it proved to be Bafana Bafana's final meaningful opportunity.
With extra time approaching, Canada finally found the decisive breakthrough. A loose ball fell kindly to Eustáquio on the edge of the box, and the midfielder fired an unstoppable shot into the bottom corner to score Canada's first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match.
The late winner sealed a historic victory for the co-hosts, ended South Africa's impressive World Cup campaign, and booked Canada's place in the Round of 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco.
