| Toyin Abraham |
Popular Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham has opened up about her long journey to financial success, revealing that it took her over fifteen years in the Nigerian film industry to start earning a substantial income.
Speaking in a recent interview with Nolly TV, Abraham disclosed that despite joining the industry in 2001, she only began making "good money" about eight years ago.
Reflecting on her early days, the Alakada star explained that actors in her generation routinely faced meager pay, often taking on roles simply to survive and maintain visibility.
“I just started making money eight years ago, and I’ve been in the film industry since 2001," Abraham stated. "Back then, we acted and got peanuts, but we did it just to survive.”
She noted that while passion and sheer grit kept her going during the lean years, her financial fortunes only shifted when her career progressed into high-value roles and major production opportunities.
The Illusion of Nollywood Wealth
Abraham’s revelation aligns with recent comments made by fellow actress Shine Rosman, who challenged the public perception of wealth within the Nigerian movie industry.
Speaking on a podcast hosted by actor Baaj Adebule, the To Kill A Monkey actress cautioned fans against equating fame with financial comfort.
Rosman argued that the public often misjudges the financial status of Nollywood stars based solely on their red-carpet appearances and social media presence. According to her, the reality behind the scenes is starkly different, with many popular actors quietly navigating financial hardships despite their household names.
