According to the Iranian foreign minister, Tehran sent the proposal to Washington through mediators, with the reopening of the vital waterway tied to certain conditions.
Araghchi said Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz at the end of seven days if the conditions were met, while indirect talks between Tehran and Washington would also resume.
“We have introduced a plan to the United States through the intermediators that if certain conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz would be open at the end of the seventh day and talks would restart,” Araghchi said.
Araghchi did not disclose the specific conditions attached to the proposal but said they were consistent with terms previously discussed by Iran and the US in June.
Reports by The New York Times and CNN said the proposal was transmitted through an intermediary as both countries explored diplomatic options for ending the ongoing conflict.
A White House official also confirmed that Iran and the US were engaged in “positive and constructive discussions through the mediators.”
The development followed indirect talks between Iranian and US representatives on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly this week, marking the first known discussions between the two sides in several months.
The talks come as diplomatic efforts intensify to find a resolution to the conflict and address the dispute surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global shipping route.
Iran said it could reopen the waterway if the US eases military pressure and lifts its blockade of Iranian ports.
Tehran also demanded an end to the naval blockade, the release of frozen Iranian assets and a halt to fighting on all fronts.
